The smallest practical gundog, eager for feather or fur, brushy cover or cold water, a romp with the kids or a nap by the hearth, Field Bred English Cocker Spaniels will always have a place in our family. We think that if you get to know one you’ll feel as we do.. And we think that’s why many of our customers are returning for their 3rd or 4th pup from us decades after we sold them their first.
One of the best things about breeding and selling English Cockers has been the long friendships they have made for us with people in many places.
They will find flush and retrieve birds, handle all from doves to sage hen. But they will make you smile, maybe even chuckle, at the exuberance and wit with which they do it. They have more fun at their work than many dogs, and they are fun to watch, and to work with. The degree of control required in Spaniel field trials has produced a dog which is intelligent, trainable, and oriented to the handler. Their size, or lack there of, often requires them to use brain more than brawn. But, make no mistake, they are little athletes.
In Most of the world “Cocker Spaniel” means English Cocker Spaniel. American Cockers have diverged from the original in many ways over many generations. So, now we have 2 breeds recognized by AKC and the other Kennel clubs around the world. Really, one would have to say there are 4 breeds of Cocker Spaniel, because both the English and American have divided into field bred and show bred. The dogs bred for the field look and act differently from those bred for show. Some of the characteristics which bring success in one venue would spell failure in the other. Likewise qualities which are desirable in a field dog are simply not important to someone trying to win at a dog show. Consequently, one will find consistency of physical type in show bred dogs, but great disparity in field performance. In the field bred Cocker Spaniel one will find disparity of physical type and more consistency in field performance and in those qualities which enhance field performance: For example intelligence, and trainability.
